Teacher's Day Celebration

Today is ‘Happy Teacher’s Day’. On this day I would like to show my deep respect to all my teachers and seniors without whose help I could not have achieved whatever I could in this life.

Of course, my first teachers were my Parents from whom I learnt a lot of things and values of life. I would like to thank my teachers in St. Lawrence High School in Kolkata, Jadavpur University where I did my Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and in I.I.T. Kharagpur where I did my M.Tech. In Production Science & Technology.

Finally, I would like to show my respect to all my seniors in my professional life in TELCO, Usha Martin, G.T.B. Colombo Corporation, McNally Bharat Engineering Co. Ltd., JCBL Ltd. etc.

Thinking of my teachers, I specially remember Bhattacharya Sir who taught us Mathematics. He used to give us typical maths questions which made us fully prepared for tricky maths questions during the test of I.I.T. entrance examination. I also remember Mitra Sir for Physics, Ganguli Sir for Chemistry, Father Pinto, Father Sassel, Father Carlson in St. Lawrence. In college (Jadavpur University) few names who influenced me were Dr. Gopal Sen (our Head of the Department), Dr. Rajat Chakraborty(Applied Mechanics), Dr. Bibhu Mukherjee(Hydraulics), Dr. Amitabha Bhattacharya (Machine Tools) and Dr. Asit Chatterjee (our Asitda of Machine Tools).

In I.I.T. Kharagpur, the Professors who shaped my life were Dr. Chandiramani, Prof. S.C.Das, Prof. Faruqi and Dr. B.G.Ghosh.

In my professional life, the names that comes to my mind immediately are Mr. S.K.Shome of TELCO, Mr. Basant Jhawar, Mr. Brij Kishore Jhawar (Lali Babu as popularly known), Mr. Rana Pratap and Dr. Ashok Chakraborty of Usha Martin, Mr. B.S.Postwala of McNally Bharat Engineering Co Ltd. and Mr. Rajinder Aggarwal of JCBL Ltd.

Each of these persons either during my studies or while working in my various jobs have contributed to build my knowledge and personality and shaped my life. I am ever grateful for their help in my life. No amount of thanks can match their contribution.

After retirement, I took up teaching of underprivileged children. Today early morning when I looked in my mobile, I was so happy to get WhatsApp messages from the four senior children whom I had groomed from the stage they learnt ABCD on the pavement in front our residential complex and now in class IX & X of a good Public School, wishing me “Happy Teacher’s Day”.

Later on, I went to the Govt. Model Sanskriti Primary School in Sector – 54, Suncity Township, Gurgaon along with my wife, where we teach now for the last five years at 12:30 p.m. We were overwhelmed with the love & affection shown by our dear students, everybody wishing us well on the Happy Teacher’s Day. Some of them presented us with cards & paper bouquets. Gave toffees to the children.

Upon asking what they would like to be in life, many said ‘Fouji’, some said ‘Teacher’, some ‘Doctor’, two said ‘Policeman’ but unfortunately nobody said ‘Engineer’ like me (may be Engineers are not in high demand nowadays unlike our time !!!). We wish them success in life. May God Almighty help them to be successful in life and pull their poor families out of poverty and deprivement.

Best of regards to all my friends on this happy occasion.
